The influence of non-figurative painting, the aesthetics of gesture, lyricism and sign born in Paris at the beginning of the 1940s will have a remarkable impact in Luxembourg following two exhibitions of French art in 1947 and 1949. It was art critic and museum curator Joseph-Émile Muller who sharpened the taste of his fellow Luxembourgers for this pictorial renewal. The country's artists, stimulated by the rebirth of non-figuration, assimilated the lesson of the painters of the new French art. In 1948, modernity was on the rise in Luxembourg with the formation of the "New Team" and would be confirmed with the "Iconomaques" movement in 1954.
