François - Xavier Lalanne’ s preferred subjects often hailed from the animal kingdom and he was known at times to stylise and abstract their original forms. His innovative works of art have a strong surrealist - poetic effect. Lalanne studied in Paris and kept a studio in the Montparnasse neighbourhood, in the vicinity of his friend Constantin Brancusi. While in Paris, he also met Max Ernst, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Jean Tinguely. During the 1950 s, François - Xavier and his wife Claude Lalanne combined forces as the artist couple
Les Lalanne and produced numerous works together. Many of their works were created for installation
within public places, such as the fountain in front of the Paris Hôtel de Ville.
