In collaboration with Alan Johnston, the Villa Vauban announces a new series of educational workshops that aim to transmit the work of the Luxembourg artist Dominique Lang.

Alan Johnston is an internationally renowned illustrator and naturalist with a PhD in visual arts. He is committed to art and environmental education and teaches all age groups. Since 2016, he is a lecturer at the University of Luxembourg and a trainer at IFEN.

The airshow

Lang's artwork "Aviation Day in Mondorf" is rather curious: it shows people in their best Sunday dress but there are no planes in sight, as the title already suggests. Through a question-and-answer game, the children discover the picture with Alan. The main question is: what is Dominique Lang trying to tell us with this painting? During the workshop, the pupils look at the appearance of the clothes and the missing planes. With the help of a collage, the pupils retell the story of the picture and will integrate the planes.

Summer trees

Alan takes a closer look at two landscapes by the painter Dominique Lang with the children. Together they try to guess when Lang painted these pictures. Is it possible to determine the season and perhaps even the time of day? After this theoretical part, we move on to a field study. Armed with a sketchbook, the students go to the park of the Villa Vauban and try to draw the nature. The sketches are then coloured in with watercolours.

A little girl

During an interactive visit, Alan discusses the "Portrait of a Little Girl" with the pupils by asking them playful questions. The focus is on introducing and understanding the composition of the image. In the studio, the children then try to interpret the portrait themselves. They first examine the relationship between light and shadow with coloured pencils and then learn about painting with water colours.
