Towards a More Inclusive Museum
In 2023, the 2 Museums of the City of Luxembourg began a collaboration with the non-profit organisation LEQGF asbl to explore the “queerisation” of the Villa Vauban. The goal was to question the heteronormative norms often present in museums and to explore more inclusive perspectives on collections and exhibition spaces.
Although the Villa Vauban mainly features European paintings from the 17th to 19th centuries, the project demonstrated that queer narratives and experiences can be meaningfully explored within such a context through a participatory and critical approach.
The collaboration included:
- a comprehensive review of the museum’s spaces, communication, collections, and public programming,
- “Queer Gaze” test visits with LGBTIQ+ audiences,
- workshops and training sessions with the museum team.
A brochure summarises the project’s findings, recommendations, and practical suggestions tailored to the Luxembourgish context. It is intended as a tool for reflection, not a fixed guide, and encourages long-term institutional transformation.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to enhancing inclusivity and opening up new forms of mediation and representation within museums.
